Transformations: Ulrieke Benner and Jan Smith - October 2008
Two Salt Spring Island artists – textile artist Ulrieke Benner and jeweler Jan Smith -- presented new work in “Transformations.” Ulrieke creates unique silk and felted textiles in classic yet contemporary fashion. She is intrigued by the magical transformation that occurs when silk and velvet are felted with wool, resulting in interesting textures and unexpected patterns. Her pieces are both wearable and decorative and are filled with vibrant colors which appeal to the senses and inspire feelings of joy, comfort and natural energy.
Recurring themes in Jan Smith’s jewelry are the passage of time, the seasons in the garden and phases of life. Jan’s training as a printmaker has a strong influence on her jewelry. She achieves nuances of color and surface by using washes of transparent and luminescent glass layers. She often incorporates drawings into her work for interesting effect.
