JO SKINNER
I came to weaving on a long, winding path. A path lined with fascinating design, beautiful colour, intriguing texture and many-many techniques. It was a distracting path, and happily many things interrupted my continued passage. I’ve spent 35 years designing things, first in the garment industry, then in architectural colour, then in web development. And now in weaving.
I’m compulsive about making things, particularly (but not exclusively) things involving fibre. The joy that comes with working with many media is the cross-fertilization that results, how one enriches the others. Of all my obsessions, colour is my favourite. (Doesn’t everyone have life-changing colour experiences?)
I am a passionate traveller. The cultures, handcrafts and people of the world’s lands inspire my work.
Creating woven works at the Silk Weaving Studio makes me feel like a kid on Christmas morning, but without the disappointment and crying at the end. It’s a place to be creative that’s as close to perfect as any I know.
